The Eggs Uncaged campaign by the Farm Transparency Project exposes cruelty in Australian egg production, even on "free-range" and "cage-free" farms. Investigators visited seven Victorian facilities in 2025, including Josh's Rainbow Eggs (Monegeetta, VIC), a major "truly free-range, ethical" brand sold in Victorian supermarkets. Findings include overcrowded sheds, dead hens in bins, feather pecking, wounds, disease, beak trimming, forced moulting via starvation (confirmed by ex-workers at Josh's), high mortality, and health issues from high egg output. In addition, Josh's Rainbow Eggs admitted to misleading consumers with claims that they rehome all their ex-layer hens.
